UNICEF: 42% of Dominicans live in poverty
Dec 2007 The United Nations Children's Fund (UNICEF) published a report that reveals that 42% of
the Dominican population lives in poverty. Although the agency realizes that macro-economic stability is
a top priority, it also sees an increase in social spending as a way of redistributing wealth and reducing
poverty, and called for more social programs. The UN agency points out that the first of the Millennium
Goals is "The eradication of extreme poverty and hunger", and this will require political decisiveness.
Currently, the Dominican Republic is the third worst country in Latin American as far as social spending
is concerned.
